Pediatric Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound

What is a Pediatric Thyroid & Neck Ultrasound?

This is a specialized imaging examination used to evaluate the thyroid gland and neck structures in infants, children, and adolescents.

It provides detailed imaging of the thyroid, salivary glands, lymph nodes, tonsils (in younger children), and the upper thymus, contributing to the diagnosis and monitoring of various conditions.

When is it indicated and what conditions can it detect?

It is performed in cases of palpable neck swelling, enlarged lymph nodes, or suspected thyroid disease. It is also used to evaluate salivary glands in cases of infection or other pathology.

Additionally, it may be used in the evaluation of thyroid function when clinical or laboratory findings require further investigation.

Which anatomical structures are evaluated?

  • Thyroid gland
  • Cervical lymph nodes
  • Parotid and submandibular glands
  • Tonsils
  • Thymus (where feasible)
  • Soft tissues of the neck
