Upper - Lower Abdomen Color Ultrasound and Elastography

Color Doppler Ultrasound of the Upper and Lower Abdomen is an important examination that evaluates the condition of the solid organs in the abdomen. Elastography is a technique incorporated into Ultrasound, which measures the elasticity and stiffness of tissues, providing essential diagnostic information.

Like all Ultrasound exams, Upper-Lower Abdominal Ultrasound with Elastography is a painless, non-invasive procedure that does not involve the use of intravenous medication or exposure to ionizing radiation, making it suitable for all patients.

Which organs are examined with Upper and Lower Abdominal Ultrasound and Elastography?

With Upper Abdominal Ultrasound, the following organs can be assessed:

  • Liver
  • Gallbladder
  • Biliary ducts
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Kidneys

With Lower Abdominal Ultrasound, the following organs can be assessed:

  • Bladder
  • Internal reproductive organs

What pathologies can be diagnosed with Color Doppler Ultrasound of the Upper Abdomen and Elastography?

Upper Abdominal Ultrasound and Elastography assess focal or diffuse pathology in the solid organs, such as the liver, kidneys, and pancreas. The diagnosis may include:

  • Chronic liver diseases
  • Fatty liver infiltration
  • Cirrhosis
  • Cystic alterations (cysts in the liver, kidneys, pancreas)
  • Solid lesions like hemangiomas, angiomyolipomas, or neoplasms in the liver, kidneys, and pancreas

Additionally, Ultrasound can detect gallstones or kidney stones. The diagnosis of stones in asymptomatic patients within the context of a Check-Up allows for timely therapeutic intervention when indicated, as well as informing the patient about possible future symptoms or complications.

The detection of stones in symptomatic patients (abdominal pain, colic) allows for the assessment of the severity of the disease:

  • In cases of cholelithiasis: cholecystitis, the presence of stones in the common bile duct, pancreatitis
  • In cases of nephrolithiasis: the degree of dilation of the renal pelvocalyceal system, investigation of the stone’s location (in the kidney, ureter, or bladder)

What techniques are used for liver examination?

The Portal Venous System Triplex ultrasound evaluates portal hypertension, usually in the context chronic liver disease, and assesses the patency or thrombosis of the portal and hepatic veins.

Liver Elastography evaluates liver elasticity and estimates the degree of fatty infiltration and/or fibrosis in cases of chronic liver disease.

What can be diagnosed with the Abdominal Aorta Triplex?

The Abdominal Aorta Triplex can assess the presence of atherosclerosis or stenosis in the abdominal aorta and detect potential aneurysms.

What pathologies are detected with the Lower Abdominal Ultrasound?

The Lower Abdominal Ultrasound evaluates the bladder and internal reproductive organs. Bladder filling is necessary for investigating pathologies such as:

  • Stones
  • Wall lesions
  • Solid masses (like papillomas)

In men, the prostate is assessed, measuring its dimensions and estimating the degree of hypertrophy and residual urine after voiding. In women, the uterus and ovaries are examined, measuring the thickness of the endometrium and investigating lesions such as:

  • Fibroids
  • Polyps

The ovaries are examined to assess the morphology, the presence of cysts or solid masses, as well as for the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome.
